ACCELERATING THE GROWTH OF CLEAN OCEAN AND SUSTAINABILITY FOR MALAYSIA IN LINE WITH THE UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS(SDG-12 AND SDG-14)
OCEAN’US is a collaboration initiative of Ocean Hero Conservation and Hatta Dolmat that are guided by the UN SDG12 Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG14 Life Below Water and Eleventh Malaysia Plan: Pollution control action plans towards the eradication of littering and usage of plastic bottles that will endanger marine life by transforming plastic bottles into fabric. This campaign is an effort to educate the importance of conserving marine life themed with ‘Plastic Bottles – Free Ocean’ and ocean sustainability in order to promote the green technology in converting plastic bottles to fabric.
These recycled plastic bottles fabric can be used by most of the generated economy industry in Malaysia, such as Fashion & Textiles, Food & Beverages, Home & Living, etc. As we are aware, fashion is the second largest waste contributor industry in Malaysia next to Petroleum industry. Malaysia ranked as the highest among the six countries analysed in terms of annual per-capita plastic bottles consumption, at about 16.8 kg per person, followed by Thailand at 15.5 kg. Since the 1950s, the production of plastic has outpaced that almost every other material due to its versatility and functionality. Most of these plastics are designed to be thrown away after being used only once (single-use) which results in single-use disposable plastics waste accumulation. Only nine per cent of the nine billion tonnes of plastic the world has ever produced has been recycled. Most end up in landfills, dumps or in the open environment.
In view of all, Ocean Hero Conservation (OHC), KL Young Designers Association (KLYDA) and Hatta Dolmat Design (HDD) agreed to build cooperation by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on “OCEAN’US” witnessed by Y.M. Tengku Dato’ Hishammuddin Zaizi Bin Tunku Azman Shah Al-Haj. The MoU signing took place virtually on January 28th, 2021 due to the Movement Control Order. This MoU was signed by the Founder of Ocean Hero Conservation (OHC), Ms. Shirene Moong, the Chairman of KL Young Designers Association (KLYDA) and the director of Hatta Dolmat Design (HDD), Mr. Hatta Dolmat himself. The MoU is a form of mutual commitment in complimenting each other`s duties and function in the perspective of helping, developing and building Malaysia in moving towards Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, particularly in organizing campaigns, providing solutions to the environment issues, and sending awareness to the public. The press conference was also graced and received a congratulations speech by the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, YB Senator Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Bin Wan Ahmad Kamal.
Going forward, implementing the OHC, KLYDA and HDD Sustainable Action Plan calls for strong partnerships and cooperation with government bodies, companies, and industrial players on clean and sustainable earth. It provides an opportunity for these institutions to work closely on expanding the pipeline of projects in the region and widening their impacts. Later this year, OHC and HDD will be hosting the OCEAN’US Digital Runway featuring Hatta Dolmat’s upcoming collection made out of recycled plastic bottles (RPET) and the Sustainable and Innovation Workshops to share the latest innovations, technologies, and hands-on solutions for the public. The OCEAN’US Digital Runway is tentatively scheduled in July 2021 and the Sustainable and Innovation Workshops is tentatively scheduled for April 2021. We hope that together with OHC, KLYDA and Hatta Dolmat, we can build awareness and generate interest in creating better policies and promoting further investments on ocean health and sustainable environment.
These may be just small steps towards a more resilient future in which humanity and oceans can thrive in harmony. But they are critically important steps we can take together. We look forward to the scaled-up partnership with Ocean Hero Conservation (OHC), KL Young Designers Association (KLYDA) and Hatta Dolmat Design (HDD) jointly supporting the Asia and Pacific countries to better protect and boost sustainable based economies.
